- <p> DIED. ANDRE TCHELISTCHEFF, 92, wine expert; in Napa, California.
- In the '30s, the California wine industry was devastated after
- 12 years of Prohibition. Its unlikely savior was a spry, 5-ft.
- 4-in. Russian emigre with Old World manners--and a thoroughly
- modern grasp of grape growing and wine production. Tchelistcheff
- was brought to the fragrant soil of the Napa Valley by Georges
- de Latour, who dreamed of creating wines to rival those of France
- at his Beaulieu Vineyard. Tchelistcheff revitalized the vineyard
- and pioneered with techniques such as cold fermentation. By
- 1950 Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was
- the best-selling wine of its type in the country. As a consultant,
- Tchelistcheff influenced generations of California vintners.
- Today some Tchelistcheff-fashioned wines fetch $1,400 a bottle.
